The moon is up to the right of the middle winter tree, and the title was influenced by some poetry that I was reading at the time.
This was my first experimentation with purely representational oil painting.
I'd used the oil paint so thickly in the foreground that it cracked and peeled off. So, I destroyed this painting, amongst many others, and started my obsessive journey in practising technically sound oil painting techniques.

    Collection of the Artist
At this point I was regulaly exhibiting my work at both the Battersea Contemporary Art Fair representing myself, and at the Affordable Art Fair with Gallerys.
In this painting I was starting to understand the effect of Interior light, at night, on the mood of a piece.

What was positive about this piece for me was the contrast achievable with the minimal palette of black and white.
This was a key piece on my way to finding my artistic voice.

This small painting was one of 11 pieces - painted as a series - where I was really beginning to understand what oil paint can achieve when an Artist discards the usual techniques of oil painting and starts to take artistic risks with brush and knifework.

I'm a huge Horseracing fan and used this piece to explore the interrelationships between mass and line.
Horseracing would be a theme that I would return to a few years later.

A group of paintings exploring the use of flat areas of colour to create a sense of form.
These have never been shown before and they proved to be artistically unsatisfying to me.

    Mark making study No 7
    Oil and Acrylic on board
    13" x 24"
    2021
    Collection of the artist.
A pivotal piece for me because, although I have been influenced by many British and American Artists, I had never really understood the French Impressionists until I had made this piece. Now I was understanding and appreciating the beauty of an individual mark - left to speak for itself - made with oil paint.

A stand alone abstracted piece which ultimately proved artistically unsatifying as far too cerebral for me. Paint can be far more than a series of abstracted symbols.
