THE WAY I SEE IT
My work is about movement and light.
It is not about representation as such, more about re-presenting. The moment is the thing - semi abstracted - blurred, defined, gone. Time becomes moving energy.
This inevitably involves light and the way it describes shapes and forms.
Light travels.
Light moves around.
Light dissipates.
Light deflects.
Light casts a shadow.
I search for an equivalent of these qualities - a quick glance at the light and an attempt to record it.
This is why pencil sketching is important for me.
I also believe oil paint is a wonderful equivalent to light and is my preferred painting medium. By oil paint's very nature, it's flexibility, richness and immediacy lends itself to making a variety of marks which break, bounce and reflect on the surface. The integrity of my marks become a record of that moment and becomes part of the history of the surface. This makes for a more stimulating painting experience.
Even if the nature of the light is static - a slow light - I still try to imbue a vitality to the work. A traditional cinematic flicker from a nervously held movie camera.
